Do You Have An Emergency Plan for Your Dog?

Natural disasters and unexpected emergencies can happen at any time. While we often plan for ourselves, it’s also important to have a plan for our pets.

Take these steps to create an emergency plan for your dog to ensure they stay safe no matter what.

Create a Pet Emergency Kit

Just like you have a go-bag for yourself, your dog needs one too. A well-stocked pet emergency kit should include:

  • Food and water (at least three days' worth)

  • A leash and collar with ID tags

  • A pet first aid kit for injuries or unexpected illnesses

  • Medications and medical records

  • A blanket or towel for comfort

  • Waste bags and travel bowls

Know Your Evacuation Plan

If you need to evacuate, don’t leave your dog behind. Research pet-friendly shelters or hotels in advance, and keep a dog travel bag packed with essentials. Make sure your pup is comfortable with car travel so an emergency trip isn’t stressful.

Secure Your Home for Emergencies

For situations where you need to shelter in place, create a safe space indoors. Keep toxic substances out of reach, secure heavy objects, and have a crate or designated area where your dog can stay calm. Make sure you have extra food and water on-hand, as well as any medications your dog may need.

Keep Identification Up to Date

Ensure your dog is microchipped and wears a collar with up-to-date contact information. In the chaos of an emergency, this can be the key to reuniting with your pet.
