Rainy Day Tips for Dog Owners This Spring

As the weather warms, you likely have grand plans for outdoor adventures with your dog. Unfortunately, rainy spring weather may have other plans.

Even if the weather isn’t cooperating, the rain doesn’t have to put a damper on your dog’s routine. With a little creativity and preparation, you can keep your pet happy, active, and your home (mostly) clean.

Here are a few ideas to make the most of a rainy day with your dog.

1.  Enrichment Toys and Activities

Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing games, and snuffle mats are great ways to keep your dog mentally stimulated. You can even hide treats around the house for a fun game of “find it.”

2.  Practice Training Sessions

Rainy days are perfect for brushing up on basic commands or teaching new tricks. Short, positive training sessions help tire your dog out mentally and strengthen your bond.

3.  Create a Cleanup Station

Even in the rain, most dogs still need to get outside for bathroom breaks and fresh air — and that can mean tracking dirt and mud into your home.

Set up a designated spot near your entryway with towels, wipes, and a mat to catch dirt and water. A quick wipe-down as soon as your dog comes inside can save you a lot of cleanup later.

Consider using a super-absorbent option like this dog drying towel to quickly dry your pup before they track mud through the house.

4.  Stick to a Routine

Dogs thrive on consistency. Try to keep meals, walks, and play times as close to your normal schedule as possible.

If you’ll be heading outside in the rain for your walk, consider a waterproof leash and collar. These are also easy to wipe down if they get muddy.

5.  Embrace the Slower Pace

Rainy days can also be a great opportunity to slow down. After some indoor play or a short walk, settle in for a cozy nap or cuddle session with your dog. Sometimes, a little rest is exactly what both of you need.
